中村家住宅（国指定重要文化財）庭の再生　[Garden Restoration at Nakamura Heritage House]

― 神と暮らしをつなぐ、琉球の庭 ―

かつて琉球王国の時代、人々は「ユンシヌカミ（四隅の神）」や「ンマムファヌカミ（南の神）」といった屋敷神に守られて暮らしていました。
その思想は、庭や道の設えにも宿り、石の据え方や水の流し方にまで反映されています。

HIFUMI合同会社では、国指定重要文化財「中村家住宅」において、琉球の石畳技術と空間思想を現代に生かしながら、庭と道を含む一体的な空間整備を行いました。

琉球石灰岩の質感や排水性、足触りを活かし、
水が走らず、足が滑りにくい構造に。
石一つひとつの据え方に、暮らしと祈りへの想いが込められています。

植栽は、神々と共にある空間としてだけでなく、
かつての暮らしに使われていた草花や、
訪れる人々の目を楽しませる花も加えました。
光や湿度に応じて調和する植物を選び、
空間全体に息づく気配を取り戻しています。

そして今回、延段や植栽に加えて、見えなくなっていた「ユンシヌカミの空間」を、もう一度この場に設えました。
屋敷神とともにある暮らしの感覚を、そっと手渡すような設計です。

この庭が目指したのは、「神に守られながら暮らす場」。
かつてと今が、石の道を通じてつながっています。

— A Ryukyuan Garden Bridging Spirit and Life —

In the time of the Ryukyu Kingdom, people lived under the protection of household deities such as Yunshinu-kami (Guardians of the Four Corners) and Nmamufanu-kami (Guardian of the South).
Their beliefs were woven into the very structure of daily life—reflected in how stones were placed, how water flowed, and how space was shaped.

At the nationally designated Important Cultural Property, Nakamura Family Residence, HIFUMI LLC undertook a holistic restoration of the site’s garden and pathways, drawing on the traditional stonework and spatial philosophy of the Ryukyuan era.

We utilized Okinawan limestone, known for its texture and natural drainage, to recreate an approach that resists slipping and gently guides water without runoff.
Each stone was placed with quiet care, honoring both everyday use and sacred presence.

The planting design honors not only the presence of the gods,
but also includes species once used in daily life,
along with flowers that offer beauty to visitors of the Nakamura Residence.
Each plant was chosen to harmonize with the site’s light and humidity,
bringing the space back to life with presence and care.

Beyond the path and planting, we reinstated the sacred space once held for Yunshinu-kami.
The design gently reawakens a way of living alongside the gods, restoring both form and spirit.

This garden was created to be a place where life unfolds under the watch of the divine.
Through stone, light, and breath, past and present are brought together once again.
